The End of Google Reader, Alternative and Options

Finally, the date is getting closer!  Google Reader is coming to an end on July 1st, 2013.  Yup, only a few days away.  I've been testing and trying alternatives sites to migrate the subscribed blogs that I read regularly.  And you might want to do the same as well before it’s too late.  Now, I use Feedly.  It’s the closest alternative to Google reader, in my opinion.

Here are a couple of articles for more details on how to set your account up if you want to read more about it.  Please check out this post here, and here.

Another alternative is to follow me on Bloglobin’, simply click here to follow.

Of course, you can also subscribe to my blog by eMail so you don’t miss my new posts.  (please see the “subscribe by email” on the right hand side-bar right below my profile picture.)

If you really want to track me down, you can also follow me on Google+Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and PinterstOpen-mouthed smile I will be happy to follow you back.

If you have any questions, feel free to leave me a comment below.  I’ll try my best to answer.  For questions that I don’t really know, I’ll ask my personal I.T. support technician (a.k.a. my hubby) for you.

  1. I've been using Feedly too. I like its 'title' view. Makes it easier. But I'm totally stuck when trying to add a Follow by Feedly button to my blog. I follow their instructions, but as with other instructions in these early Feedly stages, they don't necessarily work.

    1. Good that you're already on Feedly. I agree, guess it'll take me a little while to figure out all the features and functions. I'll let you know when I figured out how to add the Feedly button on the blog.

    1. Oh no...that's un-thinkable. I think I signed up linking with my Facebook account. So, there's one less password to remember for me. :) If you use Feedly, they'll help you transfer all your current links from Google Reader. That might be the easiest thing to do.

  5. Still can't believe Google is shutting down their reader! I think they want us all to migrate to Google+ Anyway, thanks for the heads up. I've never really been an RSS type - more a follow-by-email type. Really timely post - thanks.

    1. I agree, I think Google just want to push everyone to use Google+ by shutting down the reader. But I've been using both for the longest time. Anyway, your follow-by-email is the way to go. ;)

  6. Amy-good info. Is there a way to tell how many people read your blog on google reader? In other words-how many would you lose? Thanks!

    1. Do you currently keep track of the number of your readers? I use FeedBurner to keep track (there are many other programs out there) and it tells me how many of my totally readers are currently subscribed through Google Reader, Mozilla, Opera RSS, or other method. So, time will only tell what's going to happen when the closing of Google Reader is effective. I'll check the Feedburner report to see if it shows a lower number then.

    1. My guess is that Google wants to drive more traffic to Google+. But I'm not sure how effective it is by getting rid of the reader. Anyway, I've been using feedly ever since the Reader is no longer available. So far so good, I think. :)

  11. Hello Amy thanks for the reminder. The good news is that I follow all my favorite blogs by e-mail including you so it will not affect me to much. However, I will be happy to try out these other new options you have mentioned.

    1. Good for you that you follow all the blogs by email. :) I have quite a few that I follow by email, including yours. And the rest (a few hundreds) I follow on reader, now Feedly. Cos I don't think I can handle a few hundred emails a day! hahahaha....

  16. Sad that gr is no longer going to be available. What a tragic end but we can be connected via other social media. Bloglovin is not working despite that I have created an account but certainly Feedly is really good.

    1. The ending of Google Reader won't affect your email subscription. That's a good news. If that's how you follow most of your favorite blogs, you probably won't be affected by this. :)
