Lavender Bath Salts—Homemade Gift For Your Valentine

Homemade Lavender Bath Salts

As some of you might know, I love creating my own homemade gifts for special occasions, such as the Meyer Lemon Sugar Scrub from not long ago.  For this Valentine’s Day, let me present to you, Homemade Lavender Bath Salts!  I've always enjoy soaking in a tub of warm water, infused with soothing and relaxing aroma, such as lavender.  It really wash away the weariness and soreness from a long day of work.

Homemade Lavender Bath Salts

This Lavender Bath Salts recipe is super simple.  In a glass bowl, gently stir Epsom Salt and Dried Lavender buds together.  Epsom salt, named for a saline spring from the town of Epsom in England, is a pure mineral compound (magnesium sulfate) in crystal form that gently exfoliates skin and smooth rough patches.
   Homemade Lavender Bath Salts

Next, add the 100% pure Lavender essential oil and gently toss together.  You can also add lavender soap colorant at this point (if using).  Lavender essential oil has a calming aroma which helps you relax, and reduces sore and tense muscles.

Homemade Lavender Bath Salts

Here is a couple of suggestions on how to enjoy this Homemade Lavender Bath Salts.

To use as bath salts: Spoon about 4 to 6 tablespoons of Lavender Bath Salts under warm running bath water.  Soak for 20 minutes and let the rich minerals absorb through the skin.

To use as an exfoliator: Mix 2 tablespoons of Lavender Bath Salts with a handful of your favorite body wash.  Gently massage mixture onto skin to slough away dry patches, reveling a healthier looking complexion.

Homemade Lavender Bath Salts

Does that sound like you’re in the Spa?  My house definitely smells like one whenever I mix up a batch.  It’s a really low budget spa that you can relax and enjoy at the comfort of your own home.  I got a 3lb bag of Epson Salt at Target for only $4.99 and the 100% pure lavender essential oil online here for $14.95.  Not bad at all because you only need a very small amount in each batch.

Homemade Lavender Bath Salts

After you mixed up a batch, I recommend that you transfer the bath salts to a glass, airtight container and let it rest for a couple of days before use. This will give the herbs and essential oil time to infuse the salts with their aroma.

Homemade Lavender Bath Salts

I hope you like today’s homemade gift idea and try your hands in making some for your Valentine, or for yourself!  I’m sure your significant other would appreciate a stress-free, smoother skin, and wonderfully smelling, YOU!  Enjoy your fun and romantic Spa day at home!

  18. Hi Amy! First of all, your blog is so lovely! I'm so glad that you left a comment on my blog as it led me to you ;). Looks like I have a lot of wonderful posts to catch up on. Matcha shortbread just caught my eye. It's been sooo long since I've taken a bath..and a trip to the spa? forget about it. Not when I am a poor student still..
Now this is my kind of valentine's gift. I told my husband to never get me flowers because I kill them. Chocolates are always welcomed ;). But lavender bath salts? now that's romantic! Purple is one of my fav colors and I can't help but be in awe of your gorgeous photos! I started getting really into photography ever since I purchased my first DSLR about 6 months ago. I still have a lot to learn, but I'm loving it. Now I'm going to show this to my husband hehe

  49. I AM WONDERING WHY.. THE PRINTABLE RECIPE HAS SEA SALT.. AND IT ISN'T MENTIONED IN THE PICTORIAL? ALSO WHAT IS COLORANT?.. THANKS.. KA

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Below is the ingredient list of the "recipe" which does include the seasalt. I didn't mention it in the pictorial because I already added it to the epsom salt and it's a common ingredient that I think everyone should know what it was.

      1 cup Epsom salt
      1/2 cup Sea salt
      2 tablespoons dried lavender buds
10 to 15 drops of lavender essential oil
a few drops of lavender soap colorant/a small pinch if using powdered ones

And colorant is basically coloring for the recipe. It's optional if you can't find it. Hope my explanation helps.

  63. This is amazing, I am hoping to make it for my mom for Christmas. I was just wondering, how long does it keep? Like, how long will it stay good after I make it? Also, I was wondering he same thing with the Mayor Lemon Zest and Sugar Footscrub. If you could let me know, that would be great.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Oh, I'm sure your Mom will love it. I gave my Mom and Mother-In-Law a jar each and they loved it. If you store it well, in an air tight container in a cool dark place, it'll last for quite some time. I made a large jar 6 months ago and still using it now, they are still great. On the other hand, the Meyer Lemon Sugar scrub might not last as long compared to this bath salt because of the fresh lemon zest in those. Although the coconut oil will help preserve the zest, but I recommend you to use that as soon as possible.

  70. That's a great idea, James. But the grain size of the epsom salt and sea salt is quite big. You might want to consider grinding the salt to a finer texture if using it as a bath scrub. ;)

  71. I love the simplicity of this recipe.. making it feasible for the busy layperson. Sometimes DIY can get much too complex. I see from reading the aforementioned comments I can purchase the colorant at a craft store, but is it safe and natural? While I do enjoy the color, if it is potentially toxic, I could do without the aesthetic. Thanks for you post! -Meg

    1. I agree with you, I love simple recipes rather than a complex one. The colorant that I used is all natural and safe, made purposely for soap crafting at home. Again, I guess that also depends on the brand that you use. After all, the main purpose I do a homemade version was because I wanted it to be all natural and free of chemicals (same idea for home cooking). So, if you're not sure about the colorant, leave it out. The fragrant and aroma you get from the essential oil and lavender buds are already pretty amazing! ;) Enjoy!

    1. Hi Melissa,

With this recipe, I used 10 to 15 drops, depending on how strong you want the scents to be. Please see the complete recipe below. Thanks and enjoy!

Homemade Lavender Bath Salts: (Printable Recipe)
      1 cup Epsom salt
      1/2 cup Sea salt
      2 tablespoons dried lavender buds
10 to 15 drops of lavender essential oil
a few drops of lavender soap colorant/a small pinch if using powdered ones (optional)

In a glass mixing bowl, gently stir all ingredients to combine. Transfer mixture to a glass, airtight container and let it rest for a couple of days. This will give the herbs and essential oil time to infuse the salts with their aroma.

To use as bath salt: Spoon about 4 to 6 tablespoons of Lavender Bath Salt under warm running bath water. Soak for 20 minutes and let the rich minerals absorb through the skin.

To use as an exfoliator: Mix 2 tablespoons of Lavender Bath Salt with a handful of your favorite body wash. Gently massage mixture onto skin to slough away dry patches, reveling a healthier looking complexion.

  74. Hi there, what is the shelf life of this. I sell bath salts but have not used the dried lavender buds, rose buds or peppermint yet because I was concerned with possible mold issues....? As long as the herbs are dry will this still store? about how long you think? thanks!

    1. The lavender buds I've used is completely dried. Plus, I live in a very dry area so mold was never a concern. My recommendation is to store it in a cool and dry area without direct sunlight. I have a jar that I've kept for 4 months and still as good as new. Hope that answer your questions.

  75. Just wanna let you know that I had this on my to-do-list forever, and I finally made it as gifts this holiday season. My lavender plant had bloomed quite profusely this summer and I dried the flowers. Together with the essential oil, the salt smells sooo good. I hope my friends like them! Thanks for the recipe!
