Recently, one of my friends inquired about the different types of barleys as she came across a recipe using a particular one. I wasn’t sure about the answer so I called Mom for some clues. Of course, Mom was able to give me some good information and the benefits of adding barley to my diet. So, I’ve been drinking this Pearl Barley Lemon Water 檸檬薏米水 a few times a week ever since that conversation.
Pearl Barley Lemon Water is probably one of the most popular choices in traditional Chinese detox drinks. Many believe this drink helps to even skin tone, with emphasis in minimizing those age spots. Honestly, I don’t think I have drank enough to notice any changes, yet. But as summer approaches, this Pearl Barley Lemon Water is a refreshing and delicious way to stay hydrated. I definitely don’t mind if it provides other benefits such as helping my skin looks better at the same time. Click on the video tutorial below to see how I made it. I’ll also show you the two different types of barleys in the video to clarify which one to use.
I hope you enjoyed watching my video tutorial. If you haven’t done so, please subscribe to my YouTube channel here. You’ll be the first to know when I have new video tutorials published. I hope you have a wonderful and beautiful summer! Stay tuned for more fun and yummy recipes.

Pearl Barley Lemon Water 檸檬薏米水:
6 cups water
1/2 cup pearl barley (the raw ones)
juice of 1 lemon
1/4 cup raw sugar**
ice cubes
In a medium pit, bring 6 cups of water to a boil. Rinse the pearl barley and add to the boiling water. Reduce to low heat and simmer for one hour, or until water becomes white and barley is softened.
Remove from heat and let cool. When barley water is still warm, stir in lemon juice and raw sugar, to taste. You can add more sugar if you prefer a sweeter drink.
Fill your glass with some ice cube and pour in the Pearl Barley Lemon Water and enjoy. When Pearl Barley Lemon Water is completely cooled, cover and chill remaining drink in refrigerator for future enjoyment.
**Note: instead of raw sugar, you can substitute with traditional Chinese rock sugar (冰糖), agave, or honey.

ReplyDeleteSounds like a refreshing summer drink. I read that barley cleanses the liver. Lately I've been craving for Chinese 糖水 (dessert drinks). I have many favorites, and one of them is the Gingko nut Barley and dried bean curd (白果薏米腐竹糖水). So good.
