Slow Cooker Recipe – Asian Style Pork Ribs 簡易慢燉鍋香辣排骨

Don’t you love your slow cooker?  I absolutely do, and often think that I don’t utilize it enough.  I’ve shared a Hearty Beef Stew recipe on my blog a while ago (click here for that recipe).  Today, I wanted to share another favorite slow cooker recipe with you:  Asian Style Pork Ribs 簡易慢燉鍋香辣排骨!

These Asian Style Pork Ribs are so easy to make.  Check out the step-by-step video tutorial at the top of this post and you’d agree!  These ribs are also aromatic.  The soy sauce and Korean Chili Paste (Gochu-jang) give these ribs the deep savory and slightly spicy flavors; the brown sugar gives them a hint of sweetness which balances well with the savory soy sauce; the orange juice truly brightens up the flavors of these ribs too!

There are quite a few ingredients on the list but they are all basic Asian pantry essentials.  If you love Asian recipes, these ingredients would be wonderful starting points to stock your pantry and get cooking.  These ingredients are usually available in most supermarkets, or Asian markets.  I’ll list the ingredients and where to buy at the end of the post for your reference.

Slow Cooker Recipe – Asian Style Pork Ribs 簡易慢燉鍋香辣排骨
Ingredients into the slow cooker:
1 teaspoon vegetable oil
3 pounds pork ribs
1/2 cup light soy sauce
1 cup fresh orange juice
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons rice vinegar
1 teaspoon Chinese cooking wine (ShaoXing Wine)
6 cloves of garlic, finely minced
2-inch piece fresh ginger root, smashed
1 tablespoon Korean chili paste (Gochu-jang)
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1/4 teaspoon white pepper powder
1 teaspoon sesame oil

Ingredients for the finishing glaze:
1 tablespoon cold water
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 green onion, thinly sliced
1/4 teaspoon sesame seeds, for garnish

Preheat your slow cooker to the “stove top high” setting (if there’s one) to sear the ribs.** Meanwhile, cut the ribs into smaller pieces, about 2 to 3 ribs/bones each.

Add the oil into the preheated slow cooker and brown the ribs on both sides.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, orange juice, brown sugar, vinegar, cooking wine, garlic, ginger, chili paste, chili flakes, pepper powder, and sesame oil. Then pour over the ribs.
Cook on high for 3 to 4 hours or on low for 6-7 hours.

When ready to eat, preheat oven to broil and line a baking pan with foil (for easy clean up).
Remove the ribs from the slow cooker and place them onto the prepared baking pan. With a spoon, skim off any excess oil in the sauce remaining in the slow cooker.

Then, pour the sauce into a small saucepan heat over medium heat. In a small bowl, whisk together the corn starch and water, and add it into the sauce while whisking.

Then sauce should thicken when heated through. Gently drench the ribs in the glaze and then return to the baking pan. Set the baking pan 6-inch from the broiler. Broil the ribs for 3 to 5 minutes, or until bubbly and slightly caramelized. Sprinkle green onion and sesame seeds on top and enjoy!

** Amy's Note:  My slow cooker comes with the "stove top" searing feature.  If your crock pot/slow cooker doesn't have this feature, you can simply add the ribs into the pot along with the sauce and skip this browning step.

  4. Looks delicious! In your video, did you use 3lbs of pork ribs? It looked so little. My husband's a meat eater so I may need to double the recipe. ^_^
